The above Nigerian map was a gift to hitwev from a secondary school student. We use this medium to thank her for taking her time to draw and make the detail illustration of Nigeria vegetation. The map inspired us to bring to you the story of how Betty spent her last Christmas. Poor Betty! Her expectation of a fun-filled Christmas was not to be. When she left her NYSC base in Kebbi State for Lagos last December, she had planned to spend just two weeks in Lagos with her big sister. They would later travel together to Onitsha to see their parents and finally spent Christmas in their village in Anambra State. But she was barely settled in Lagos when her big sister pleaded that she escorts her kids to see her husband’s relation in Port Harcourt. On getting to Port Harcourt, Betty fell sick and had to be operated on for appendicitis. She spent the Christmas and New Year in hospital bed in Port Harcourt. Her mum had to travel from Onitsha to nurse her until she became strong enough to travel to Onitsha. After her recovery, her apprehensive mother insisted that Betty writes NYSC to redeploy her to Onitsha so that she could be close to her. Betty did and the NYSC authority replied that she had to finish her service year in Kebbi or wait for second batch coming up in September for the redeployment to be effected. This implies that a marginally healthy Betty must return back to Kebbi hoping to stay fit for another Christmas.
